The “Silkolene” brand name

The Silkolene brand name has a long history, with the company originating in England. Initially, it was called Dalton and Company, being named after its’ founder, and sold Silkolene products. However, recognising the strength of the Silkolene brand, in the early 1980s, the company was renamed Silkolene Lubricants. Towards the end of the 1980s, in 1989, Silkolene Lubricants was acquired by the German Fuchs group, and the products were subsequently renamed Fuchs Silkolene.

The products themselves gained a high international regard.[citation needed] The Sikolene company developed specialist lubricants for aviation, including oils for the Merlin engine, as used in the Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster, to name a few. Silkolene dedicated many years on technical cooperation with the US Air Force, and was also involved with the supersonic passenger aircraft, Concorde. The company amassed expertise with synthetic lubricant technology, and Silkolene became a recognised world leader in the field of synthetic lubricants, including esters.[citation needed]

Synthetic lubricant technology continued, and in the early ’90s, developments continued to include Aerospace engineering, along with motorsports, including rallying and motorcycle racing. An early partnership was with Honda UK Motorcycle Race Team. With positive market exposure, coupled with a very high degree of research and development (R&D), and success in competition, Silkolene products became the market leader in the UK.

Presently, Silkolene products continue to be manufacturered at Belper in England. They are now also made in Germany, the US, and SE Asia.

Fuchs in motorsports

Fuchs, like many of their competitor brands of lubricants, have a strong worldwide presence in motorsports, particularly in Europe and the USA.

In the 2-wheel automotive segment, the Fuchs Silkolene brand sponsors many different classes of motorcycle racing, including prototype based racing: MotoGP, and production based “SuperBike” and “SuperSports” racing: World SuperBikes, World SuperSports, British SuperBikes. The brand has also been involved with Motorcross, and Speedway. Fuchs have a current long term partnership with Kawasaki motorcycles, although they also sponsor Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha. Silkolene have also participated in the Isle of Man TT races, arguably, the toughest test in the world for any motorcycle.

World Record, New Time Aloft
Takuo Toda set a new récord for longest paper airplane flight at a competition in Hiroshima Prefecture in April of 2009. His record flight topped Blackburn’s by 0.3 seconds, now the world récord is 27.9 seconds. He folded his plane, measuring approximately 10cm in length, from a single sheet of paper. The previous record of 27.6 seconds was achieved by Ken Blackburn in the USA. Ken is one of the superstars of the paper aircraft world today and keeps all of us, all over the World, working hard to match his skills. He is also very much a gentleman and has been surpassed once by Chris Edge and Andy Currey from England, only to smash the 20.9 seconds set by Chris and Andy with a world topping 27.6 seconds. This time is going to take some beating. The very best of luck to all who try.

World Record, Old UK Time Aloft
The longest UK (ex-World Record) duration of a flight by a paper aircraft, indoors, is 20.9 seconds.  This was achieved by Chris Edge of British Aerospace Defense LTD, and Andy Currey from the Defense Evaluation Research Agency. By an amazing coincidence they both recorded exactly the same time and on consecutive throws. “The Guinness Book of Records” allowed two World Record holders, because this record is about the times set at the same event, so it’s similar to setting identical pole position times in formula one.  This record was established on July 28, 1996 at Cardington Airship Hangars in Bedfordshire, England.

Here are the rules for setting a Guinness world record for paper airplane time aloft: 1. The flight must take place indoors. 2. The plane must be made from a single sheet of paper that is no larger than 9.84 by 13.90 inches (250 x 353 mm) and weighs no more than 5 ounces (150 grams). Typing or copier paper works great. 3. It is OK to use some tape or glue. 4. The plane must be thrown from level ground. The stopwatch must start when you release the plane, and end when the plane touches anything (the floor, a wall, a chair…). 5. You are allowed six attempts. 6. You must submit the following to file a record claim: • Signed statements from two witnesses saying that they saw you set the record. • A newspaper clipping about the event. • Color photographs and a continuous video tape of the flight (you must have both). NOTE: it is not required that a Guinness representative be present.

World Record – Distance
The longest distance flown by a paper aircraft launched indoors, from the ground, is 193 feet (58.82m) This was achieved by Tony Fletch of Wisconsin, USA at the La Crosse Centre on May 21, 1985 and is a world record. The distance flown is almost equal to the length of a Jumbo Jet, and much further than the first flight by one of the Wright brothers.

NASA – Helps Pupils
NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) in the Langley Research Centre Hangar used ex-astronauts and engineers to help pupils from various schools in Hampton, Virginia, USA to develop, build and fly a record breaking large paper aircraft, with a wing span of 30ft 6in (9.15m) on March 25, 1992. World Record – Largest Wingspan
The paper aircraft with the largest wingspan, 40ft 10in (1.97m), was made by a team of students from the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering, at the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands.  It was flown indoors on May 16, 1995. Launched indoors by one person, it flew a distance of 114ft 2in (34.80m) from a 10ft (3m) high platform.   In order to comply with the rules, it only had to fly more than 50ft (15.24m) from the edge of the launch platform.  This aircraft would have covered a greater distance, but for a wall which stopped it in mid flight, causing extensive damage to the nose section, and still smashing the world record in the process.

Most Expensive – One of NASA’s
One of the most expensive and lightest paper aircraft ever flown, was the paper aircraft thrown inside one of NASA’s space shuttles, during a routine space flight. The launch of Fulcrum in July of 2004 was a testimony of passion for the sport of cycling.  At the front of the company were three aerospace engineers who had applied their specialized knowledge of aerospace technology to the advancement of their favorite sport.   Since the beginning, Fulcrum Wheels have proven their superiority on the road.   They are designed and developed with underlying elements of Campagnolo, technological advancements of the aerospace industry and they have a pleasantly youthful Fulcrum twist.  
With revolutionary concepts in wheel development and design, Fulcrum Wheels boast a perfectly balance wheel.  To get that perfect balance they have patents!  That’s why there are trademarks all over this article.  Fulcrum was big on trademarks and patents like Dynamic BalanceTM,  2:1 Two-to-oneTM, and the MoMagTM system.  
When you push your pedals, the rotational force on the sprocket produces slack in the freewheel spokes and a loss of rim tension.  This results in unwanted flex of the whole wheel and an inevitable loss of energy.  Fulcrum has solved this common cycling dilemma with its 2:1 Two-to-One™ Spoke Ratio system.  The 2:1 Two-to-One™ system supports the Dynamic BalanceTM by doubling the spokes in the critical areas.  The Dynamic BalanceTM system boasts flawlessly balanced dynamics of rotation, with the credit given to the careful distribution of the rotating masses.   The MoMagTM system supports the other two quite well.  It actually stemmed from Campy.    The MoMagTM system feeds each nipple into the rim through the valve hole, the process is guided perfectly into place with a magnet.  Thus the Mag in the name MoMagTM.   These three systems work separately or in conjunction with one another and they are what makes Fulcrum the advanced company that it is today.
Another concept in the design of Fulcrum Wheels are the aluminum hammer head spokes which have a unique aerodynamic profile comprised of a variable truncated-cone cross-section.  The rims on the Fulcrum Wheels are CNC machined which help to relieve the rim area of pointless load points.  CNC machining allows the wheels to have no spoke holes on the inner groove which eliminates the need for rim tape and provides maximum torsional stiffness.  Yeah, these are some serious wheels.
Fulcrum Wheels come in several models.  Numbered relatively consecutively, for continuity we suppose. Although you will notice they left out the even numbers.  The Racing Zeros are excellent for racing.  They provide superior acceleration, are very light, have rockin’ aerodynamics and roll like you’re riding on air.  Plus, they are super sharp looking.  The Racing 1′s are great for racing as well as daily rides.  They are fast, stiff, smooth as well as very compliant and comfortable. They are sure to dramatically improve the handling and look of your bike.  As was mentioned earlier, Fulcrum skipped over all the even numbers and went right to the Racing 3′s.  Racing 3 wheels are intermediate hoops.  They are very durable, quiet riding and longer lasting than most wheels on the market.  They are also notably faster.  You will notice that you will gain speed quicker and will be able to hold it easily.   They are also quite high on the bling scale.  For the real heavy duty rides, or for consistent training, go for the Racing 5 model.  They are durable, quiet and very long lasting.  The Racing 5 Evolution wheels boast the Dynamic Balance system with two, oversized (silver) spokes to offset the rim joint for a perfectly balanced wheel.  They are said to be stiff, smooth, true, and durable.  They aren’t the lightest wheel in the Fulcrum line, but they aren’t THAT heavy either.  The Racing 7′s are more of a beginner’s wheel.  They are strong, stiff, a decent weight and come in racing red.  At the very top of the line are Fulcrum’s Racing Light Wheels.  These wheels are Fulcrum’s version of Campy’s Hyperon but without the carbon bodied hugs.  The Racing Light’s are on a entirely different level and have earned the status as well as the price.  They are one of the best all round wheels you will ever ride on.  Very fast, very strong and yes, you can climb in a cog or two lower than normal. Phenomenal for climbing but also great on the flats.
